  • UPDATE Aug. 28, 2015:

A cockroach infestation has temporarily shut down Bube's Brewery in Mount Joy, Lancaster County.

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture inspected and closed the facility at 102 N. Market Street on Monday following complaints of an infestation, agency spokesman Logan Hall said.

"There was evidence of a cockroach infestation," said Hall, who confirmed that constituted "a large number" of roaches, but was unable to give an exact number.

Brewery owner Sam Allen said that all restaurants within Bube's complex would remain closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Dining areas in the complex include:

  • Alois Restaurant, which is home to murder mystery dinners
  • The Catacombs Restaurant, which has fine dining
  • The Bottling Works, a restaurant and bar area inside Bube's
  • An outdoor Biergarden

A "closed by order" sign on the main, yellow door at Bube's Monday afternoon stated that Bube's Brewery was "temporarily closed" due to "violations, which constitute an immediate danger to public health or safety."

The sign said the facility must remain closed until the state Department of Agriculture re-inspects the facility and deems it "safe to re-open."

But Allen said he didn't think the infestation was enough to close Bube's.

Allen said his Ehrlich Pest Control, his exterminator, called the infestation "moderate at worst."

PennLive attempted to reach the pest control company Monday night, but was unable to reach any officials who could comment on the situation. PennLive left another message for comment Tuesday morning.

Allen said an exterminator regularly comes to the restaurant, and that exterminator visited following an incident Aug. 17 in which multiple cockroaches spilled out of an old chimney door in a kitchen.

"I think we were OK and could have continued to be in business to solve this problem while we were in business," Allen said.

Hall said the facility would "remain closed until the issue is resolved." When the infestation appears to be cleaned up, Hall said a food sanitarian would do a follow-up inspection, which the facility would need to pass before reopening.
