Introduction to the EPA Screening Methodology The Screening Methodology for Class I is a framework developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA, 1998) for the evaluation and analysis of wind-related health risks in all Class I areas in the USA: the coastal waters at and above the federal class boundary, the tidal rivers, streams and bays of the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts, and all areas containing a major source of human-generated pollution. To provide greater stability in the data generated by CAMPUS, a special method of field analysis was developed which has been widely adopted by federal agencies, academia and industry. This approach enables detailed investigation of the health risks associated with many pollution-producing industries by analyzing the data from several sources simultaneously. In addition, the Screening Methodology can be used for the evaluation of individual industries by analyzing wind fields of a smaller or larger scale in a smaller or larger area, using a specific analytical model (e.g., CAL MED, the Model for the Assessment of Human Potential Impairments). This has been accomplished through extensive use of data available from CALMED and a number of different analytical methods of wind field generation and examination. These analyses were made by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the Institute of the Earth System Science (LESS), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This document addresses the use of wind, ocean and tidal data collected under the Screening Methodology for the evaluation of wind health risks in Class I areas. 3. Environmental Impact of Wind Health Risks in Class I Areas An environmental impact statement (EIS) completed last year by the EPA considers both health and environmental impacts associated with the assessment of the Screening Methodology. This EIS examines the health impacts associated with each component of the methodology and also provides a summary of the overall environmental impact of wind health hazards to the marine environment, land and groundwater under this methodology.
