Seongsan Ilchulbong (Seongsan Sunrise Peak) 성산 일출봉
The facts
Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak) is one of the special places that people visit to see the sun rise as each old year turns to the new. It's a tuff cone crater that was formed when a volcano erupted under the ocean. It was designated as Natural Monument No.420 in 2000.
One thing to keep in mind is that it's not easy to climb as it rises to 182m above sea level, with a steep slope. Yet the wind that embraces your entire body on the peak will more than make up for the sweat you shed to get there.
On the top of Seongsan Ilchulbong stand 99 chiseled rocks in a crown-like formation, and between them rests a large meadow.

This peak often appears on the Korean drama Mendorong Ttottot 멘도롱 또똣 Warm & Cozy starring Yu Yeon Seok and Kang Sora.

There are many legends about the origin of Jeju and one of them is Grandma Seolmundae. Grandma Seolmundae is a daughter of the Great Jade Emperor. The Great Jade Empero r prohibited intervention in world of human beings. But she opened the sky and landed secretly. Because of her selfish behavior, her father got angry and made her go down to the land. But she had the courage and determination to rise above the deportation because she loved the land people so much. She was really big so she was able to make the Jeju Island. Her washboard was Udo Island and the wash basket was Seongsan Ilchulbong. When she washed her laundry, she urinated at Udo Island. That’s why until now the tidal current between Udo Island and Seongsan Ilchulbong is strong and fast.

The views are definitely worth the hike. Besides catching a sunrise, the sunset is also gorgeous.

Sunrise peak is one of the absolute highlights of any visit to Jeju island. The stunning view at the top of the peak are unequalled and make the climb to the top definitely worth it. The climb is quite a bit of a challenge and depending on your speed and bodily health it can take you anywhere from 20 minutes to 50 minutes to get up to the peak. On your way to the top you should stop for a couple minutes at the decks placed at several spots during the climb upwards. The view from these decks is wonderful and some cannot be seen as well at the peak, especially in the direction towards the city. The climb downwards is fast and steep, also the stairs are more narrow than the climb upwards thus taking a break while descending, apart from the one or two spots that have a viewing dock, is not a very good idea as you will block the other tourists coming down the hill.

Seongsan Ilchulbong is one of the best place to watch sunrise in Jeju. It took us about 20-30 minutes to go up the peak. The place has a spectacular view and one of the must visit place while you are in Jeju.
