Running into an 'Access Not Configured" error when trying to run AlgoSleuth? The GA API plugin has a bug affecting it that isn't turning on API access in the background.
5
Download a "How-To Fix" guide here --------------------->https://goo.gl/kBOivd
6
The Concept:
7
AlgoSleuth harnesses the power of the Google Analytics API to provide a powerful analysis of your site's organic traffic and highlights all major Google Algorithm updates that may have affected you over the past several years. The setup process takes, on average, just 2-3 minutes. After that, you can use AlgoSleuth to query results for one or any number of Google Analytics profiles.
8
9
Important Notes - READ FIRST:
10
1.First and foremost, you need to make your own private copy. Just click on File > Make a copy at the top of the screen, then follow the instructions below.
11
2.Please do not request access to this Google Doc. Follow note #1 and make your own copy for data analysis.
We do ask, however, that you click on the folder icon at the top of the sheet & save our copy in your Drive as we will update this tool with future algorithm changes.
12
3.In order for this tool to function properly you MUST be logged into the Gmail account that has ADMIN ACCESS to the Google Analytics profile that you wish to run data on. Please ensure that you're logged into the appropriate Gmail account before following the instructions below!
13
4.This tool queries the GA API for site visit #'s for Google Organic traffic only, 30 days prior to & 30 days following an update. Example: If you're looking Panda 23 on Dec. 21, 2012 our tool will pull the site's Google Organic visit #'s for Nov. 21 - Dec. 20 and Dec. 22 - Jan. 20, 2013 (30 days prior to & 30 days following).
14
15
Setup Instructions:
16
1.After making your own copy as detailed in the notes above, ensure that you see "Google Analytics" to the right of "Help" as illustrated in the screenshot below. If not, refresh your browser and it should appear.
17
18
2.First we need to tell the script which UA# (Acct. Profile) we would like it to fetch data for. To do this, press the "Google Analytics" button then click "Find Profile / ids".
19
20
3.An authorization box will come up requiring you to grant the script access to communicate with your Google Analytics account. PLEASE NOTE: Be sure that you are logged in to the Gmail account that has Admin access to your GA Profile. Click "OK". After this, another popup will appear asking you for permissions. Click "Accept"
21
22
4.After finishing the last step, go up and click on "Google Analytics" again and click "Find Profile / ids". (If you run into an "Access Not Configured" message please see the PDF instructions at the top of this page for how to fix.) In the box that pops up, use the dropdown boxes to select the appropriate account > web property > and then profile that you want to see data fetched for. Once you've done this, highlight & copy the "ga:#######" snippet to the right of "ids".
23
24
5.Now paste that GA:###### from Step 5 right here-->PASTE GA:12345678 HERE
25
6.Once you've completed Step 6, all you have to do is click "Google Analytics" one last time and then click "Get Data". It will freeze for a few seconds and then should read "Success. Writing results. - Script done".
26
27
7.Now navigate to the AlgoSleuth Data tab and you will see all the traffic values plotted 30 days prior to and 30 days following any given Google Algorithm update, as well as corresponding % increases/decreases.
28
8.The AlgoSleuth Graph tab shows your traffic plotted against the first major Algorithm updates of 2011. You can look here for the sudden increases/drops that would be indicitave of algorithm-change affected traffic.
29
30
Disclaimer:
31
Please keep in mind that there are SEVERAL external factors that affect organic traffic such as seasonality, economic conditions, political factors, supply & demand, etc... Some of the drops/gains indicated in this sheet could be correlated to other factors and not necessarily an algorithm update/refresh.
32
33
To help with this, we have used conditional formatting to give heavier emphasis to large-scale changes (+/- 25%). We have also included brief descriptions and hyperlinks of what happened with each algorithm update (compliments of Moz). Lastly, there is overlap between a handful of the algorithm updates. Sometimes updates occurred just days after a prior one. Keep this in mind when looking directly at the "% Change" column in the AlgoSleuth Data tab.
