Komen apologizes for taking funding away from Planned Parenthood, and promises that funding will resume uninterrrupted. Update.

Courtesy of The Scoop Blog:

Komen for the Cure just released the following statement from Nancy Brinker and the Susan G. Komen Board of Directors:

We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women's lives.

The events of this week have been deeply unsettling for our supporters, partners and friends and all of us at Susan G. Komen. We have been distressed at the presumption that the changes made to our funding criteria were done for political reasons or to specifically penalize Planned Parenthood. They were not.

Our original desire was to fulfill our fiduciary duty to our donors by not funding grant applications made by organizations under investigation. We will amend the criteria to make clear that disqualifying investigations must be criminal and conclusive in nature and not political. That is what is right and fair.

Our only goal for our granting process is to support women and families in the fight against breast cancer. Amending our criteria will ensure that politics has no place in our grant process. We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities.

It is our hope and we believe it is time for everyone involved to pause, slow down and reflect on how grants can most effectively and directly be administered without controversies that hurt the cause of women. We urge everyone who has participated in this conversation across the country over the last few days to help us move past this issue. We do not want our mission marred or affected by politics - anyone's politics.

Starting this afternoon, we will have calls with our network and key supporters to refocus our attention on our mission and get back to doing our work. We ask for the public's understanding and patience as we gather our Komen affiliates from around the country to determine how to move forward in the best interests of the women and people we serve.

We extend our deepest thanks for the outpouring of support we have received from so many in the past few days and we sincerely hope that these changes will be welcomed by those who have expressed their concern.

I also just heard this on MSNBC so it is official.

Wow!  Way to go ladies!

I am very impressed with how aggressively people spoke out concerning this outrage. I have not seen a response this fast since the SOPA outrage last month.

I still have no idea how Komen rationalized making this controversial decision in the first place, but I think this will serve as a lesson to EVERYBODY in the future to not bend to the anti-women political agendas of the Right Wing fringe, Especially when it comes to something as important as fighting cancer and supporting women's health issues.

Update:  While I still believe that this is a victory for those who are fighting to improve women's health in this country, I also realize that the "cancer," if you will, that still exists in the form of Karen Handel within the Komen foundation, is still a lingering malignancy that should be removed.

However I think the only way THAT will happen is if keeping her as VP negatively impacts their funding.  If you click here you can see a list of their "corporate partners" who provide the majority of their donations.  Perhaps a couple thousand e-mails sent to those on this list might kick start the countdown to the end of Karen Handel, and her right wing supporters, influence on this organization.

Couldn't hurt.

Update 2: According to the Plum Line, the Komen Foundation has NO plans to change their leadership or promise to provide donations to Planned Parenthood in the future:

I just got off the phone with a Komen board member, and he confirmed that the announcement does not mean that Planned Parenthood is guaranteed future grants — a demand he said would be “unfair” to impose on Komen. He also said the job of the group’s controversial director, Nancy Brinker, is safe, as far as the board is concerned.

I asked Komen board member John Raffaelli to respond to those who are now saying that the announcement doesn’t necessarily constitute a reversal until Planned Parenthood actually sees more funding.

He insisted it would be unfair to expect the group to commit to future grants. “It would be highly unfair to ask us to commit to any organization that doesn’t go through a grant process that shows that the money we raise is used to carry out our mission,” Raffaelli told me. “We’re a humaniatrian organization. We have a mission. Tell me you can help carry out our mission and we will sit down at the table.”

Pushed on whether this means the new announcement wasn’t really a reversal, Raffaelli pushed back, arguing that Komen, in response to all the criticism, had removed politics from the grant-making process. “Is it really unclear that we’re changing the policy to address criticism?” he said.

So Nancy Brinker is safe, as I assume Karen Handel is as well, and there is no definitive promise to continue the foundation's relationship with PP.

I think it is the appropriate time to say fuck the Komen Foundation, and, as so many have already suggested, to send out money directly to Planned Parenthood.

Here is their link to donate.

    The bullshit meter is spiking on this one. Unless they dump their ultra right wing executive team, I believe they will find another way to screw PP. You don't change the ideas of someone who wants to destroy Planned Parenthood overnight.
    Also, it appears that the kerfluffle has revealed that the people running this scam are living pretty nicely and they don't donate nearly as much as they should for breast cancer issues. No more pink products for me. They should take their pink handgun and hold it to their heads and use a pic of that as their new logo.

    Don't get too excited yet Uncle G.
    I'm not too jazzed with this part;

    We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities.

    They'll pay out the open grants, sounds like they won't give them any further grants, but they sure can apply! You betcha! And the nebulous affiliates are all fundies, aren't they??

    Nope, this is spin. Don't tkae your eyes off of them.

    They can easily change their minds tomorrow. Sorry but this is just not good enough. Any organization this poorly run is nothing more than a scam. They spend more money on their own salaries and lobbying than they do on grants for research or actual procedures.
    How stupid do they think people are? Komen, the horse has left the barn and is NOT coming back. They only issued this missive because their funds for salaries and their right wing lobbying arm are drying up PDFQ.
    They need to pack their ribbons and leave like the carnival barkers they are.
    No more pink shit in my house. I won't even click on Care.com's breast cancer links anymore and told them so as well.

    Considering who is behind the curtain at Komen's...there is no doubt their decision is based on the money they were going to lose in the millions.

    In other news: Komen's partnered up with a gun dealer to offer a pink Walther P-22 *Hope Edition* to celebrate cancer awareness month.

    Dear President Obama's mother died of breast cancer. I'm boycotting Komen and all those pink ribbons in her name. Their retraction is too little, too late. And if our Democracy is to survive (separation of church and State?) we MUST vote out all those with a Teabagger mentality. And THANK YOU to Ann Dunham for giving America our best President, ever. May you rest in eternal peace.

    Hmmm, she leaves open the door to deny it later.

    In either case I think their new policies mean they should stop giving money to Penn State - several criminal investigations going on including wrong doing of funds. The have given $6 million to them so far.

    Either way I am proud that my state, Connecticut, whose regional office of Susan G Komen told them they were going to ignore them and still give planned parenthood funds.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The response from the people of this country that forced them to reverse their decision is something I am proud of. I am so sick of these right wing radicals trying to destroy organizations that do so much good. Planned Parenthood does not just do cancer screening and birth control, they help keep STDs under control.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Guess that means they will have to rethink their donation to Penn State since that university is under criminal investigation. Oh, that's right. Penn State has a problem with pedophilia; not important when one can make a statement against abortion rights. What hypocrites.

    I'm glad that Komen backtracked, or had a sudden dose of Komen Sense as the headline at HuffPo states, but I will never support them again. Support goes straight to Planned Parenthood.

    I think all of us should start a Planned Parenthood walk, similar to the Susan B. Komen walk, in support of women's health and breast cancer screenings. We will do it for the under served, underfunded and underrepresented!

    I support Planned Parenthood period.

    Komen for the Cure has no idea what they've done by going after PP. They lost the public's trust, something that isn't going to be easily gotten back.

    My money will go to PP. An organization I completely trust both with my money AND with women's health issues. Pink crap is no longer welcome in my home. It's just too little too late.

    On another note never underestimate the power of WOMEN! I am very proud of my sisterhood this morning! We did NOT just roll over and take it! We saw BS and we called them on it, and got them to make changes!Do I trust them? Nope, but we banded together for what was right and got things done!

    So they realized their crazy rightwing arrogance was jeopardizing their gravy train and decided to backpedal, lying as fast as they could. Color me not impressed.

    The cat is out of the bag, ladies. We took a good, long, hard look at your organization, at your half-million+ salaries, the millions you spent trying to defeat national healthcare, the millions you spend suing small charities you think are encroaching on your turf, your links to Koch and Bush and Co, your attempts to convince women that chemicals that are giving them cancer are just fine and dandy, your lobbying to make sure that the links between those chemicals and cancer aren't publicized or even studied.

    And somehow in all this, the fact that they just cut out grants for stem cell research ($12 million) has been lost. They're still playing politics.

    This "charity" has controlled literally BILLIONS of dollars over the last several decades. That is too much power concentrated in the hands a couple of egomaniacal, rabidly conservative women with ties to the rightwing, evangelical plutocracy that is destroying our country.

    Enough is enough. Give your money to your local charities, the ones who actually put their donations to good use, as opposed to SGK, which uses your money to fight against the middle and lower classes, and to fund their founder's plastic surgery.

    According to Huff-Po, the Komen press release says nothing will change from what they were planning two days ago. They will finish distributing funds already promised - no change. PP can apply for grants next year but is not guaranteed that they will receive the grants - no change. Pardon the analogy, but this is lipstick on a pig. They need to boot Handel and he political hack cronies out of Komen.

    And for that matter, why the hell should women's basic healthcare depend upon a mega charity like the Komen Foundation? How much of the donated funds will go towards "operating the charity". Never again will they get a single penny from me. I'll donate to the clinics that need it.

    I wonder if they realize how many donations that they just lost. How many women who walk in their walks will not be participating anymore? I, for one, refused to participate in their walks because of the mandatory $2000.00 that you had to raise for it. I had friends who nearly didn't make their $2000.00 and they would of had to make it up out of their own pockets. I said, no thanks. No one is going to tell me how much I have to raise when I am willingly walking 60 miles and donating mine and my friends money. I will always send my money directly to PP.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Anonymous8:59 AM

    They are sayng that they will fund out THIS grant and then PP can "re apply and MAY get another grant.
    It was a non apology and I am not falling for it. SGK has been one of my monthly donations, but after this and after finding out about the excessive salaries of those running this so-called charity, I feel my donations are better off going straight to another charity.

  43. Anonymous9:04 AM

    Plain and simple - MONEY TALKS.
    Komen lost funding due to their decision. Funders have been transferring financial support from Komen directly to Planned Parenthood.

    Arizona Republican Senator Jon Kyl led the charge in the Senate to defund Planned Parenthood, spouting nonsense and bullshit.

    SEN. JON KYL: Everybody goes to clinics, to hospitals, to doctors and so on. Some people go to Planned Parenthood. But you don’t have to go to Planned Parenthood to get your cholesterol or your blood pressure checked. If you want an abortion, you go to Planned Parenthood. And that’s well over 90 percent of what Planned Parenthood does.

    Only 3 percent of what Planned Parenthood does is abortion. When he was called on it, Senator Kyl’s office said: "His remark was not intended to be a factual statement."

    Anti-abortion Republican Rep. Cliff Stearns (Florida) made unsubstantiated charges and led a witchhunt to probe Planned Parenthood’s finances.
    "If you look at all the government reports which have already been done on Planned Parenthood, they’re completely cleared of any of the charges that Cliff Stearns claims he’s looking for."

    In 2011, Komen hired gubernatorial candidate Karen Handel (South Carolina). She has an open agenda to defund Planned Parenthood and its services to low-income women and families (such as the Healthy Babies initiative), as part of her political life.
    She's been Tweeting, just like Sarah Palin. (Rolling eyes...)

    Komen board member Jane Abraham is the chair of the Susan B. Anthony List. You remember them - they created the Team Sarah PAC.
    These people have been outright lying about Planned Parenthood services and about the causes of breast cancer, with completely disputed and unscientific claims about links between breast cancer and abortion.

    Fact is, one of the most well-known cancer research support organizations has staff and board members who actually lie about breast cancer. That is really truly shocking and exploitative. These days, even the good guys are liars, these days. How do these "Christian" executives justify lying!

    These is politics at the expense of the poor and the uninsured, both men and women. Thanks, Tea Party!

    http://tinyurl.com/73yhgs4

    http://www.democracynow.org/2012/2/2/after_right_wing_campaign_leading_breast

    What a horrible realization to come to - apparently a Christian's word is no longer worth anything. Absolutely shameful.
    For a long time now, I've indulged and tolerated family and friends repeating complete unadulterated bullshit without calling them on it, because I knew it was something they heard on talk radio, or repeating what they heard from a trusted church leader, their pastor, and they had every justification to BELIEVE them. I knew THEY weren't intentionally lying.
    But no more. "From henceforth," I will NOT give this garbage a pass. I WILL confront every lie with the truth. I will hold them accountable as if they were deliberately telling untruths themselves, when they parrot and spread lies.

    Komen obscures expenses

    The Race for the Cure is run by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, a nonprofit organization set up to fight breast cancer in 1982.
    In 1998, it raised over $54 million in 85 separate races. (This is a gross number. Komen will not say how much of this amount went to fund-raising expenses and how much to breast cancer causes.)
    [Note: this article is from 2001. Komen has generated revenues far more than this in recent years.]

    Joining the bandwagon in the early 1990s:
    Revlon’s Run/Walks for Women in New York and Los Angeles netted $4 million in 1999 ($17 million between 1993 and 1999), which the company contributed to breast cancer charities.
    The Avon Breast Cancer Crusade, which sponsors three-day, 60-mile walks, netted $15.6 million from its four 1999 events.

    The impressive sums raised and contributed by these corporate charities are, of course, not gifts in the usual sense (i.e., donations out of company profits). They are the contributions made by millions of volunteer athletes and their supporters, bundled together, repackaged, and released under the corporate logo of the organizing charity.

    Participating companies gain for themselves an immeasurable amount of public goodwill. And because they are dealing with unrestricted donations from volunteers rather than investments from shareholders, they are essentially unaccountable for how they distribute the funds.

    But when it comes to cancer policy, they are not in the lead, and women racing for the cure would do well to reflect on what it takes to actually win.

    ~~

    From Komen Foundation 2010 federal tax return.

    Expenses - $177 million.
    Services and Programs - about $74 million, roughly 41%. [Recognized charitable standards: 65% or more of its income on services.]
    Salaries - $18 million
    Marketing - $18 million
    "Consulting" - $18 million
    Office - $11 million
    Technology - $8 million
    Travel - $2 million
    Conferences - $2 million
    Race production - $2 million
    "Other" - $7 million

    Not a good value, in terms of charitable organizations.

    Thanks Gryphen for the link to the corporate sponsors of the newly exposed corruption of SGK.

    I will be writing emails to them detailing why I will never give to SGK and why I will support PP directly from this point forward.

    I am a bit ticked-off that Andrea Mitchell is currently basking in the light of the announced reversal. I don't think she is about to question its questionable aspects. That would undercut her contribution in exposing the corporate scam.

    Mayor Bloomberg is on her show right now, talking about his touted $250K donation but also saying "we should support both organizations."

    BS! SGK betrayed women and apparently has been doing so for a long time. I am just thankful that their real agenda has finally come forth.

    You cannot trust SGK, and she should be more skeptical. I hope other news hosts and reporters are more thoughtful and less taken in by a supposed "victory."

    When I was in college, PP was where I and my friends went for annual exams, pap smears, and breast cancer screenings as well as other medical treatment. They were sliding scale and empathetic to young women without much cash and away from their parents. They also, of course, treated all women in the community, respectfully without judgement.

    The immediate and overwhelming support for PP following this fiasco is amazing!

    Breast cancer has touched my family's life more than once. I will support, financially and vocally, PP and cancer nonprofits that actually works towards a cure without political baggage or questionable practices.

    To those who think getting rid of Karen Handel will do any good...consider that the malignancy in this organization goes all the way to the top. They hired her knowing her background. Look up Nancy Brinker's background. She has given lots of big donations to various GOP candidates and the GOP itself. SHE is at the heart of this decision all the way. She fucking makes $475,000 a year salary from this group. Nope..this statement is way too little, way too late. She is just trying to protect herself. She found a cash cow in her sister's death. How morbid is that? Last year they collected $400 million and spend a mere $75 million on seeking a cure. When they went after small "real" groups who dared to use the words "for a cure" in slogans, using much needed research money on lawsuits, they made it clear where their minds and hearts are...and it is not aimed at defeating cancer. Heck, if they were able to find a cure, their big buck jobs would be gone.

    I sent Yoplait a note last night. I have been spending the extra money because I thought it would go to a good cause. No more.

    Gryphen, regarding your update on the corporations who support various so-called charities:

    The corporation encourages, nay, pressures their employees to not only volunteer their time, but also collect and donate monies to the recipient organization of that particular year.

    Of course, the corporation gets the benefits of the advertisement during the Fundraiser itself, and whatever deductions they can derive from it all.

    There is no altruism involved in the whole process, except that of the hapless employees who have been hoodwinked into doing all of the work and parting with some of their own probably meager incomes.

    The lesson they need to learn is lie down with dogs and get fleas.

    Or acting like a fake charity and supporting right wing nutters who have been invited to be a part of the organization has consequences.

    Continue the boycott, shut them down. They are profiteers and indulgence sellers. The history of this organization shows that recent events were not out of character, but just what should be expected of them.

    Let the right wing own this and support it or not. They have already bought group this years ago. It is a joke and a scam. I have relatives who died from cancer and I'm not pimping their memory for millions of to line my pockets. These people are.

    Even if Komen fires Handel's ass -- they won't get a penny from me.

    I've been going around the retailers in my town that all have the "Pink" shit from everything from can openers to god knows what. Spokes to owners and managers and advised they will be stuck with the stuff for two reasons:

    Komen screwed themselves and true supporters of this issue will not support Komen now as PP is the charity of choice and they won't do the "Pink Stink".

    Secondly -- the product is to increase the retailer's bottom line with minimal donation to any cause, if any in some cases.

    I could tell the retail owner's haven't been challenged before as their mouth's dropped to the floor -- yea morons -- you too have been outed!

    The local newspapers in my area and surrounding areas printed my letter in the editorials to educate how we are being scammed by the retailers and the issue of Komen's what I would call piddly $700,000 grant to PP when you look at the salaries and costs paid from donations.

    Planned Parenthood is not just about abortions and breast cancer screening.
    PP is not just for poor women.
    PP is not just for college students.

    PP is a HEALTH CLINIC, no different than your private OB-GYN. Women's health. Prenatal care, STDs, birth control, cancer screening, Healthy Baby Initiative, referrals for pediatricians, WIC, social services.
    The clinic provides HEALTH CARE. What each patient is there for - what their medical need is - is their private medical business. A matter between patient and provider.

    Just one more illustration of why standards of care and a physician's duty to a patient CANNOT be legislated by politicians.

    Instead I'll still look for better organizations to support so the approx. 25% of everything the local Susan G. Komen branch raises no longer goes to the national Foundation.

    Number of women in America who have used Planned Parenthood at some point in her life: one in five.

    More than _90%_ of Planned Parenthood health care is preventive.

    ~~~
    I'm reading Karen Handel's Twitters. Boy, that's some read.
    On the Jan Brewer's racist Arizona immigration laws:
    It is an outrage that a judge has blocked the implementation of AZ’s common sense immigration law. http://bit.ly/cYKPdr #gapolitics
    Interesting. The lovely young Georgia peach that Twittered originally is 23 year-old Jade Morey;
    "...a conservative southern belle with a passion for politics. She is the immediate past Chairman of the Georgia Association of College Republicans and served as Campaign Manager for female Congressional candidate Angela Hicks. Jade also enjoys outdoor activities - particularly bird hunting, fishing, water sports and off-road adventures. She can hold her own at a BlackJack table and is a fabulous hula hooper. Jade hopes to one day pursue a law degree. For now, however, she will continue doing what she does best: working with her fellow Republicans to further the conservative cause for limited government."
    Goodness. Sounds like a Sarah Palin wannabe and no doubt, a childhood beauty queen. And it also looks like Sarah Palin did her some favors with the "Sarah Palin's Alaska" producers, Mark Burnett and Lisa Hennessy.
    She's going to be on 'Expedition Impossible', an obvious 'Amazing Race' rip-off.
    Expedition Impossible, the next evolution of high adventure and human drama, is a new global competition series from Executive Producer Mark Burnett. The series will feature teams of ordinary people doing the extraordinary, as they compete in the biggest adventure of their lives.
    In Expedition Impossible, teams of three will solve problems while racing across deserts, over mountains and through rivers. Each week a new stage of the expedition will be revealed. Will teams crumble under the pressure of having to think clearly in the wilds of the great outdoors, or will they work together to get through and complete their adventures? After ten stunning legs of competition, one team will cross the finish line first to claim victory.
    "We think the ABC audience will respond to this incredibly fun show, which is equal parts high extreme competition, teamwork and strategy featuring unique landscapes and different cultures," said John Saade and Vicki Dummer, Senior Vice Presidents, Alternative Series, Specials and Late Night, ABC Entertainment Group. "We look forward to collaborating again with Mark Burnett and his team to create an epic series."
    Mark Burnett and Lisa Hennessy serve as executive producers. Both the television show and format will be distributed internationally by Mark Burnett International.
    I agree: this is spin, pure and simple. They and their rabid anti-reproductive choice supporters underestimated the vehemence of the reaction to their decision.
    Komen has a multi-million dollar, several year grant to Penn State Med Center- yes, the same school under formal investigation regarding Sandusky. It's not connected to cancer research, but hey- neither is the 3% of Planned Parenthood's abortion services, which aren't all about providing abortions, some is counseling.
    And what about Bank of America, a corporate partner since 2005? The company is under formal investigation for numerous types of fraud in NY, CA, NV and AZ. I didn't see Komen end that relationship...
    I am a breast cancer survivor; my mother and her cousin, my great aunt, and my sister lost their battles with the disease.
    I have supported Komen since 1999... no more. My donation went to Planned Parenthood this year, and I'm encouraging my family and friends to donate elsewhere, never to Komen. All of my tees will go to Goodwill- or my rag bag.
    Here's the thing about organizations like Komen. They, themselves, do not provide services. They receive donations, have extensive administrative costs (i.e., big salaries) and then they disperse the donated money to organizations that actually provide the services. I've never understood why I should donate money to such an organization (and you can include United Way here) when it means that less of my donation will go to services, because a good bit of it is going to a middleman's salary.
    Rush Limbaugh Whimpers in Defeat As Komen Caves to Planned Parenthood
    ...Defunding Planned Parenthood’s breast cancer screening for poor women because Karen Handel doesn’t like Planned Parenthood was a reprehensible move. Basing it on the fact that Planned Parenthood is under investigation at the hands of their Radical Right wing self-proclaimed Alinsky terrorists who are facing numerous investigations and charges themselves was even more ridiculous. The fact that a Republican is wasting our tax dollars investigating Planned Parenthood as a continuation of the Lila Rose and James O’Keefe’s hit job is even more reprehensible. The fact that Komen gave millions to Penn State made this a transparently absurd claim.
    This time, the facts won. Lessons to liberals (aka: everyone who is not insane and does not watch Fox News): Pushback hard, swift, and with a vengeance upon first blood or else you’ll be left holding the tatters of freedom.
    Lesson to Right Wingers: You are not as powerful as you thought you were and your message is repugnant to the majority of America. Good luck in 2012 trying to hijack the country for your radical agenda with Mitt Romney at the helm of bad ideas.
    When Rush Limbaugh is whimpering into his golden mic about the power of the Femi Nazis, it’s a great day for America.
    As quickly as they caved, it is obvious that they were aware of how quickly this could have destroyed their organization. Their response has not really lessened the danger that they face. I suspect that if Komen sees their donations plummet, Brinker and Handel WILL be tossed under the bus.
    Thanks for the link to Planned Parenthood.
    I say SGKomen is toast insofar as I and my family are concerned.
    Aside from their obviously political decision to defund Planned Parenthood and rather dodgy explanation of why they did it, I am appalled to learn of the high salaries given to top officials in SGK.
    That money should be directed to finding cures, not providing a lifestyle of ease and comfort for the administrators of the Foundation.
    Americans have walked, run and sacrificed to raise money for this Foundation, and it blithely spends it on inflated salaries while underfunding organizations that work on the front line of women's health care.
    Shame on the Komen Foundation and its Board of Directors.
    ReplyDelete
  103. I think it's pretty clear that SGK is not bending to pressure from the right wing - SGK is right wing. They knew who Handel was and her views before they hired her. And expect more about her as more is learned about the lobbying she was hired to do on behalf of SGK. There's way too much to cover in a comment, but whomever believes today's announcement is a reversal of anything is apparently still naive enough to play the tables in the Right Wing Casino.
    Way to much to cover in a comment, but FDL has excellent articles as does DKos.
    Also this (and more) at DU, which hasn't gotten the attention it deserves as it clearly substantiates SGK's right wing posture across the board --
    "In addition to pulling funds from Planned Parenthood, The Susan G. Komen Foundation also decided to stop funding embryonic stem cell research centers making it fully transparent that the organization has evolved from non-political/non-profit to a partisan advocacy organization.
    That means the loss of $3.75 million to the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, $4.5 million to the University of Kansas Medical Center, $1 million to the U.S. National Cancer Institute, $1 million to the Society for Women’s Health Research, and $600,000 to Yale University. That’s a loss of nearly $12 million dollars in research money to eradicate breast cancer this year alone."
    A little background is in order. This issue is not new; it's just been off the radar.
    Nancy Goodman Brinker, founder and CEO of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Susan was her sister.
    Largest contributor to George Bush's first presidential campaign. George Bush political appointee - Ambassador to Hungary (2001-2003); Chief of Protocol (2007-Jan 2009). She owns the largest collection of Hungarian art outside of Hungary, the Nancy G. Brinker Collection.
    Owner of In Your Corner, Inc., sold to AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals.
    Married/divorced from the "Chili's" restaurant dynasty. They own EatZi's, Cozymel's Mexican Grill, Flyer's Island Express, Big Bowl Asian Kitchen, Grady's American Grill, Taco Cabana, Rockfish Seafood Grill, Corner Bakery Cafe, Romano's Macaroni Grill, On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina.
    Very Republican/Right Wing/Conservative.
    Here's a very good read. A 2005 letter to Komen from Indianapolis Right to Life, condemning and chastising for any relationship to Planned Parenthood, going back more than a decade. http://www.lifeissues.org/abortionbreastcancer/komen/fact_sheet.pdf
    This isn't new. Nancy Brinker and Komen board members will have to decide if their organization is humanist or part of the political machine.
    Our golf league has a charity that we donate to each year. For several years, we sent the money to Kommen. Finally, as treasurer I asked why we were sending our money to Texas, when there are cancer research organizations at every hospital. So we rotated each year to a different area hospital. Then we chose Hospice to donate to. What bothered me about Komen is they sent me address labels, notepads etc. We sent the money to help research, not for do-dads. They take in enough money from their runs plus merchandise. I will NEVER donate to them.
We join Mayor Bloomberg and our partners in the philanthropic community today in their efforts to preserve access to cancer screening for women throughout the U.S.
    The Lance Armstrong Foundation will add an additional $100,000 to Mayor Bloomberg’s matching challenge for Planned Parenthood’s cancer services fund.
    Planned Parenthood Raises $3M In Three Days
    The Planned Parenthood Federation of America has raised more than $3 million in the last three days, a spokesperson told TPM, after a massive outpouring of support following the Komen Foundation's decision to cut funding. The Komen Foundation has since reversed its decision.
    "Over the last three days, Planned Parenthood Federation of America's breast health fund has received more than $3 million from thousands of people across the country," the spokesperson told TPM in a statement. "Every dollar we received for this fund will go directly for breast examines, diagnostic services, breast health outreach and education so that more women can receive this critical care."
    Turns Out This Isn't An Official Komen Foundation Handgun
    Yesterday we reported finding a pink handgun from a discount gun-seller claiming to be affiliated with the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
    And, with the Kormen Foundation's habit of partnering with everyone from KFC to Major League Baseball we, and about half the internet, thought it was a genuine.
    Turns out we were wrong. And so was the rest of the internet that reported the same thing.
    It's been on display for all to see what a failure that organization is -- in the people they surround themselves with; in the people that have input of the decisions/management; in their massive amounts in admin/payroll costs and not for what is was supposed to stand for, and on and on and on.
This is a way to help women beat the odds to win against this nasty disease. I am absolutely fed up with the little pink ribbon machine.
    I remember being a young 17-year-old girl in 1972 who went to Planned Parenthood for birth control. It was shocking to me to see poor women in their late 30s accessing the clinic as well.     Anyone who wants to support breast cancer research should just buy the breast cancer stamps from the Post Office. Since 1998, 950 million stamps have been sold raising $80 million for breast cancer research. By law, 70% of the money raised goes to National Institute of Health Cancer Research and 30% goes to the Defense Department's Medical Research program. No administrative costs, no skimming,no ribbons, no runs, no muss, no fuss. I haven't bought a non-breast cancer stamp since they were first issued in 1998. Check it out.
