MUSCAT, Oman – A consortium led by Spanish Sacyr subsidiary Valoriza Agua has won the 250,000 m3/day Sohar desalination project in Oman.

Awarded by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP), the independent water project will include the design, construction, ownership, financing and operation & maintenance.

The project is part of the OPWP’s plan for five further desalination plants, as set out in a seven year statement.

Earlier this month the 281,000 m3/day Barka desalination plant moved forward with a Suez-led consortium winning the project (read WWi article).

Oman is aiming to increase its overall desalinated water capacity under contract to OPWP to 1.3 million m3/day by 2020.

The Sohar consortium includes Valoriza Water (51%), along with Oman Brunei Investment Company (25%) and Sogex Oman (24%).

Using reverse osmosis membranes, the facility is expected to start operation in 2018.
