My Coworker bought an iPad 2 at Target on March 14 as a birthday present for her son. She opened it up on March 18 to get it all set up, however when she opened it there were three rocks that all well secured to the interior with tape. There was also a nasty note from 'Foxconn' workers which had Chinese characters and the following message written in English:

"Foxconn workers revenge, suck USA."

Apple told her to take it back to Target and exchange it.

[UPDATE - March 20, 2012]

My coworker told me this morning that she went back to Target yesterday to return this item per instructions by Apple. When she bought the iPad 2, it was sealed in plastic and had no reason to believe there was anything wrong. Upon visiting the return desk, she said she was approached by Target security and was essentially interrogated for about an hour. At first she said they were very rude to her. Security said they had records of her buying iPads in our area and returning them (which is not true). She had never been to that Target store, nor had she ever purchased an iPad before. These tactics were obviously used to intimidate and flush out an actual thief. After listening to her story, and seeing her demeanor, it became apparent to security that she was not guilty of any wrong doing. She returned the iPad at the Target store of the original purchase and was told she had to purchase the iPad at another Target as they were sold out.

And a big thanks to all the people here at MacRumors who have accused me, the OP, as some type of schemer. This incident happened to my coworker, not me. I thought you all might enjoy this story as I thought it was hilarious seeing the rocks taped so well to the inside of the box. I have ordered my own 3rd generation iPad from Apple which is going to be delivered on the 22nd.

Again, my purpose in this post was to share a funny story with you all. I'm perplexed by the amount of degenerates who have nothing better to do but to cast aspersions on new members of this forum. I am embarrassed to call myself a member of this community.

Clearly that hand writing doesn't come from a person who knows how to write chinese. Nice try.

Wow... I can verify that the chinese looks mostly right, although I'm not sure what they wrote for revenge, which should be 報仇 in simplified Chinese.
Edit: Yes the Chinese is poorly written, if this is real I'm guessing it's someone who bought the ipad in the US, then resealed it with this poorly written message hoping to lay blame on the chinese workers..

Edit 2: I was wrong about the above that last word is 復仇, the word for "vengeance". I just learned a new Chinese word today... hmm

The guys @ Foxconn could make it explode if they inject voltage into the right components. Why bother with silly rocks when shrapnel makes a stronger message.

+1.

Either way, I suspect this would be fairly easy to find out the truth. The box should have the serial # and ICCID of the iPad that's supposed to be in there, so it shouldn't be terribly difficult for Apple to see if this particular iPad has been registered and/or trackable. It would be even easier if this is a 4G model, since the IMEI is on the box as well. And if this iPad is found anywhere near the buyer's location, woe to him.

Isn't foxconn known by another name is China? I'm not buying it.

Also, with how close they are monitored, I can't imagine that a worker would have time to get the rocks and tape them down and doodle that message.

My coworker was on the phone with Apple when I took this picture. She says they have opened up a case number for this incident. Based on what the Apple representative said, this is not an isolated incident.

I agree with what some of you have said, I believe the iPad 2 was switched with rocks here in the US and not at Foxconn. The rocks were very well selected however, as the closed box had about the same feel as a real iPad box (in terms of weight).

This is not the first time something like this has happened (usually not from the factory, much more likely one that was returned empty or stolen by employees.

That's great that apple is doing an investigation, but I would also contact the credit card company and do a chargeback, just as insurance in case Target doesn't make it right.

I wouldn't be surprised if that really happened.

When the iphone 3gs was released, I bought mine from apple italy online store. All I received in the mail was an iphone box filled with seeds/small rocks in a bag. Perfect weight of an iPhone. Turned out there was a *insert rude word* at Fedex italy/malta.

Needless to say, I'm purchasing from the UK nowadays.

So this is implying that a worker is boycotting its own work place... that doesn't make much sense to me.

I call BS. That "writing" did not come from someone who can write Chinese. My kids can do a better job than that. It should be immediately apparent that something is not right about that box just by picking it up, that the weight is concentrated in the middle. Nice try.

It's pretty obvious this was not done at the factory, but the question is then, whodunnit?

The person who returned it re sealed to the store for a refund I would guess.
I could imagine that not many stores would unseal a package if you had a receipt and an unopened box.
