Kim Kardashian might just be on to something, when it comes to weight loss.

The 35-year-old reality star is following the high-protein, low-carbohydrate Atkins diet in her quest to shed her recent baby weight. 

And now, a new study has confirmed that a high-protein diet is the key to weight loss.

Eating protein causes people to feel fuller, according to scientists from Purdue University, Indiana.

Lead study author Dr Richard Mattes said: ‘A good deal of evidence suggests that protein activates satiety hormone release and so should be most strongly tied with fullness ratings.’

Dietitians have long suggested that high-protein foods could lead to weight loss.

And yet, the theory hadn’t been tested on a large scale – until now.

The team of scientists set out to conduct the first systematic review of the effect of protein intake on perceived fullness.

Dr Mattes said: ‘Individual studies are often conducted in small populations or with different approaches that can make interpretation of results challenging.

‘Our study combined multiple experiments to confirm the presence of an effect.’

The team analyzed utilized both meta-analysis and directional analysis to determine that higher protein loads have a greater effect on fullness than lower protein loads.

  • Eggs
  • Nuts and seeds 
  • Chicken
  • Cheese
  • Greek yogurt
  • Fish
  • Milk 
  • Pork loin
  • Tofu 

Thus, they found that protein intake is related to satiety – which is defined as fullness between meals.

Furthermore, the team found that a person only needs to increase their protein intake by a modest amount to feel fuller between meals.

And yet, the scientists noted that feeling full is not the only thing that affects what a person might eat.

Dr Mattes said: ‘Feelings like hunger and fullness are not the only factors that influence intake.

‘We often eat for other reasons. Anyone who has ever felt too full to finish their meal but has room for dessert knows this too well.’

The study didn’t determine the precise amount of protein a person needs to prolong fullness, nor did it investigate what times the protein should be consumed.

And so, the study urges people to steer clear of consuming protein to excess.

But, it also suggested that people should consider a moderate increment in protein consumption as a first step.

Dr Mattes said: ‘Though this study did not specifically evaluate dieters, feeling fuller could help reduce food intake, an important factor when dieting.

‘If these effects are sustained over the long-term – and our study only looked at short-term effects – increased protein intake may aid in the loss or maintenance of body weight.’

The study was published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
