Product Description

In this comedic look at real life events that are almost too bizarre to believe, reporter Bob Wilton (Ewan McGregor) discovers an experimental top-secret wing of the U.S. military called the New Earth Army, trained to change the ways wars are fought through New Age psychic power. In search of his next big story, Wilton tracks down Lyn Cassady (Academy Award winner George Clooney), a shadowy figure who claims to be a member of this legion of Warrior Monks with unparalleled psychic powers who can read the enemy's thoughts, pass through walls, and even kill a goat simply by staring at it. Inspired by Jon Ronson's non-fiction bestseller of the same name, this is an eye-opening and hilarious story of the government's attempts to harness soldiers' paranormal abilities in order to combat it's enemies. Also stars Academy Award winner Kevin Spacey and Academy Award nominee Jeff Bridges.

Amazon.com

Hard to define but easy to enjoy, The Men Who Stare at Goats is the preposterous yet more-true-than-not story of a small-town journalist named Bob Wilton (Ewan McGregor) who, trying to prove himself in Iraq, stumbles upon a man named Lyn Cassady (George Clooney) who claims to be a psychic spy for the U.S. Army. With dazzling cinematic efficiency, the movie bounces back and forth between the origins of the New Earth Army--a squad of American Jedi warriors--and Bob and Lyn wandering through war-torn Iraq, pursuing a mission that turns out to have been assigned by a vision. The movie shifts from giddy comedy to melancholy as a portrait of human pettiness, manifested in military paranoia and corporate greed, unfolds. The ending loses a bit of steam, but most of The Men Who Stare at Goats is a delight--unusual yet satisfying, funny and thoughtful in turns. Jeff Bridges plays--of course--the addled yet charismatic founder of the New Earth Army, while Kevin Spacey plays--of course--the weaselly, manipulative psychic spy who turns what was meant to transform the world for the better into a mechanism for propaganda and worse. Adapted from the bestselling nonfiction book of the same title by British journalist Jon Ronson, The Men Who Stare at Goats niftily balances surface lunacy with serious undercurrents, buoyed by excellent performances from all involved. --Bret Fetzer

As far fetched it may seem, the mindset of the Pentagon is we have the money to spend, so send me a Lobbyist and we'll go from there.

I had to do quite a lot of research to make sure that the astonishing claims made in this book are actually true. Guess what? THEY ARE!

This has been a a great movie for entertainment the few times we've watched it. You can't really go wrong with a slightly goofy comedy with Clooney. This movie is based on true events, and from what we've been able to find has a pretty entertaining history when it comes to the truth when we've done research about it.

A top-secret wing of the military is run by Jeff Bridges. He was paid for a couple decades to go around the country and research truth, love, finding peace, and searching for inner powers. When he returns, he is given a company of men to train in the powers of the mind. The whole story revolves around a reporter (McGregor) who is following Clooney around to try and get this story from him about his past and ends up going to meet this man who led this revolution in mind control and powers. Along the way, you get the back story and get to see some of the history behind it all.

This movie has many people in it including George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Jeff Bridges, and Kevin Spacey. It is well worth the price to rent, and is a pretty good movie to buy as well, which, we will eventually do, because I get tired of having to rent it, ha ha. It's a great movie. I would definitely give it a chance if you're looking for something a bit different.

If you're looking for a documentary don't watch this movie. If you want to watch a funny movie that nudges at real life then you'll enjoy this. Most of this is far fetched entertainment that is taking real world military experiments and blowing them out of proportion, but that's the point. Sometimes the military does some crazy stuff like try to make target seeking bombs by putting cats in them or trying to make super soldiers by giving special ops guys lsd. This movie isn't giving you case by case examples of things the military has actually done, rather is is spinning a entertaining narrative that's inspired by historical examples of the military being freaking weird.

Psychological warfare is real and brought to you through media and our government "leaders" who invoke fear in voters to herd them into a certain way of thinking. Just look at the USA right now. Officials don't like the current president not for his "atrocities" but for his horrible acting. He's giving away the behind the scenes of how much control these people really have and how they can really just do what they want. Both sides have been acting in their self interests for decades and now it's more blatantly obvious to the average voter than ever before thanks to a certain leader. Jedi mind powers are more real than you are led to believe, but they don't come in the form of telekinesis, they simply come in the form of using illusions like fear against your opponent.

Imagine the US Army's hiring Robert Bly to help a special unit of soldiers get in touch with their deep masculine warrior natures and to develop their spiritual and psychic powers. The unit described here might be the result, though Bly is not mentioned by name. A journalist accidentally stumbles on a member of this group and later connects with them when his life falls apart. The film is the story of the group and of what his encounter with them did for journalist's life. A disclaimer at the beginning announces that more of this film is true than you would think--which would be the case if any of it were true. It's hard to imagine a bigger mismatch than the US Army with the new age men's movement. That mismatch is the basis of the film's comedy. On the other hand, the seriousness with which the army takes itself--as it should in war--is a perfect foil for the seriousness with which new agers take themselves. I found the film very entertaining, but if you know nothing about Bly or New Age you will probably not appreciate it. I can hardly recall another film where there was no romance even suggested. This is really a guy's film. My wife couldn't relate to it all.

This movie, with such an odd title, was much better than I expected it to be. Can a movie with George Clooney be bad? The narrator is a grounded, normal man, so his view of these paranormal activities the CIA was involved with started out from a grounded, skeptical perspective. He gradually gets somewhat won over as he tells the story but he never loses his solid grasp of reality. The movie says that more than you would believe of what you see in this movie is true, and I do know that some of the things did happen, perhaps not in the exact context this story puts them. I really enjoy and appreciate how the writer, Barbara Hall, plays with ideas of a supersensible world, and extrasensory perceptions. She skillfully leaves the viewer the freedom to explore and decide for themselves whether or not bizarre events actually did happen. I found this a very enjoyable comedy, with things to scratch my head about long after it was over.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absurd bis in die Genialität!

Sketsche.
