lol thats awesome
Nov 22 '12 at 16:10, by Florian Margaine
jQuery encourages bad coding practices

@JohnResig FYI, this chat has some nice features such as inlining an image or special links (xkcd, SO links, wikipedia, etc)
@Loktar that was mentioned by everybody...

Jun 22 '12 at 6:43, by Florian Margaine
crap, I earned the jquery badge :|
:P
but yeah

You don't say you hate it

haha

4:01 PM

You have had a consistent opinion

now I can go back to bed.

You point out the main thing I agree with

@FlorianMargaine sick?
Flu?

its mostly the users

4:01 PM
@FlorianMargaine Isn't it around 17 in south of France ?

it is
I was just kidding related to the xkcd pic ._.

Again, Bow chicka wow wow.

@dievardump I don't know anything about guru's but I've got three guru badges.

Good. I was worried they tilted the time zone 90° again

@dystroy grenoble isn't south ._.

4:02 PM
It's far south from Lyon...

not really

Gross, it's 3am here is Sydney, and i'm still on NZ time so it feels like 5am.
But hey, saw JohnResig hahaha

@OctavianDamiean which ones?

he got bored with your arguments and left the building

Last question is for Florian :

Q: jQuery programming style: Does it have a name?

mbearAfter looking through some jQuery documents the layout of the code is completely different from what I'm used to seeing both in Python and JavaScript. I'm sure there's a name for this programming style, but I can't find it (or ask the right question to identify it). (If I understand the thought p...

4:04 PM
hey guys I talked to a random internet person today who wrote some code!
HELL YISS

I don't give a sh** I have an Autograph from Lea Verrou waiting for me in France
...

@dystroy, two things could happen: a) mbear has NO idea who he is. b) mbear has a brain aneurysm.
and c) John reads question, realises educating people is pretty much impossible, and becomes a poet.

eh, I think its more like
> Gets criticized for jQuery, doesn't give a fuck, because made jQuery and is immensely popular :P
^ which is a pretty damn good accomplishment

also, rolls around in $$$ from Secrets of the JavaScript Ninja

haha
made the internet roll in $$$ as well..
so many needless $$$$$$...

4:09 PM
@phenomnomnominal He's doing exactly the opposite of realizing educating people is impossible.

eh, idk its not impossible

I think by helping with Kahn Academy thats shown.

@SomeKittens, yes exactly! Until he reads that question
Kahn Academy is brilliant

^^ yeah I couldn't agree more
o/ @Darkyen

4:11 PM
did i missed Resig :(

\o @Loktar

That's really impressive.

He's still fairly opaque

You missed much butt kissing @Darkyen
@OctavianDamiean nice, I forgot about the timer yesterday

4:12 PM
And I'm pretty sure he just starred my comment about Kahn Academy :P

@Loktar lol tl;dr update pls

@Loktar Y U NO PING TEH RIGHT PERSON?????!!!!1

@phenomnomnominal no. That was me.

Hahahaha, :P

I just crushed your dreams dude

4:12 PM
bad uses of JavaScript existed long before jQuery ever came out - jQuery being popular doesn't stop bad devs from existing, the only thing that stops bad devs is good education, which is why I've written two books and am working at Khan Academy
2

@phenomnomnominal it is indeed, just clicked through some of the content on the cs-course, looks very promising

you were almost starred by a guy on the internet who made a js library!

Doubt he even knows about stars
@JohnResig That won't stop bad devs, bad devs don't read books.

^ lol

Too true, sadly

4:13 PM
Fair point

Education makes good devs, but it doesn't stop bad ones.

But it stops beginners from turning into bad devs
Possibly

Ehhh....

If only peoples first thought when they started to use JS was to go on Kahn Academy, not w3schools...

I think jQuery helps facilitate bad devs, mainly because it makes it easy to do things incorrectly. Its like the VB of the net, which can be seen as good for some reasons, and bad for obvious other reasons. However in fairness it does come down to the dev, not necessarily always the library.

4:14 PM
not even Java stops bad devs

alright
this room is too serious

@JohnResig True. Completly. But some of us (including me), here, thinks that jQuery by becoming what it is - a too big core sometimes completly messed up and 95% of 25 000 plugins badly written - facilitate bad devs

@Esailija ha, and there's me thinking Java made bad devs.

@SomeKittens That doesn't make any sense - by definition, eduction making a good dev has to be turning a not good dev into a good dev

4:16 PM
@phenomnomnominal thats googles fault :P
damn W3schools and their great SEO.

@Loktar, yeah too much.

@OctavianDamiean Java has ridiculous level of hand holding and almost impossible to do clever stuff

@JohnResig got any swing at Google? Get them to push w3schools waaaaaay down in the results

@Loktar I ignored w3schools in my Google search Options.

Yeah same here @dievardump

4:16 PM
@dievardump, me too

heh, if Google did that Id stop using them :P

That would be bad, really bad.

@JohnResig But there's a difference between a "not good dev" and a "bad dev." The former acknowledges their incompetence and wishes to learn, the latter sees themselves as good devs and never improves. (read more)

W3Schools even has a forum

If Google arbitrarily decided what sites should be ranked based on the way they perceive the sites usefullness I would consider them an evil company who want's to push their own agenda on the world :P

4:17 PM
I'm not saying education is bad, I'm just saying it's not the solution to all the terrible "programming" that's going on out there.

> Hmm I dont like the colors they use, bump it down 3 ranks and send them an email.

xkcd has written about everything...

It's not arbitrary though haha, it's observably damaging the internet.

Q: jQuery intelligent event unbind

Vap0rI'm trying to intelligently unbind events in jquery so I can easily enable/disalbe them. I'm trying to avoid using state variables because it shouldn't be necessary and it makes my shared functions very cluttered. Here's what I tried initially that didn't work. var dragStart = $('#ruler').mous...

@phenomnomnominal I disagree
I personally don't like w3schools.. but if you look at w3fools they have fixed everything those guys pointed out

4:18 PM
@FlorianMargaine :')

I just met the worst help vampire
Person : Bro i have a question regarding C++
Me [ Challenge Accepted ] : Ask out

@Darkyen congrats

I don't like w3schools for the same reason I wouldnt admit i used a gamemaker to make a game :P

@Loktar not the SQL injections

Person : How do i copy paste a program from the web, into C++

4:19 PM
@Loktar, yeah and if w3schools had a big perma-banner on their site saying "PLEASE READ W3FOOLS BEFORE VENTURING FURTHER", that would be fine.

@SomeKittens what else would be?

@Loktar I don't like w3chools for their usurpation

Me : [what da fuk did i just see ]

Really the attacks on w3schools are pretty ridiculous
its all about education

@phenomnomnominal why would they?

4:20 PM
if i don't know how to make it better, i can't. If I don't care... i should probably stop being a developer at all

any dev worth their weight in salt wont use w3schools anyway

@dievardump they wouldn't

@Loktar the attacks?

and would figure that out soon enough w/o another site telling them not to.

@Loktar I think 95% of "beginning" web dev use it thinking it's w3c associated. That's what I did 5y ago

4:20 PM
@Loktar, that's the point though! It's the first thing that a dev who ISNT worth their weight in salt sees when they are trying to learn better

w3schools is accessible

@GNi33 I don't know of a good solution. It's less of a programming issue and more the human condition.

@dievardump meh, 95% just say "Imma google it!"

Yes, and that's the first thing you find. "Oh yeah what is that event property already? I'll google it -» w3schools"

4:21 PM
HAMMERTIME!

«3

@FlorianMargaine hah that is crazy
the sql injection.

HAMMERZEIT!

@Loktar yeah...

4:22 PM
However in fairness that article isn't teaching about sql injection. Its showing how to use the insert into.

@Loktar exactly..

!!s/insert into/insert the bad way into/

@FlorianMargaine Invalid command /s/insert into/insert the bad way into/
@FlorianMargaine However in fairness that article isn't teaching about sql injection. Its showing how to use the insert the bad way into. (source)

and if you tell about sql injection, you might as well tell about all other security issues as well... and boom you have inaccessible tutorial

you don't have to

4:23 PM
What is bad with jquery? I'm under the impression that it is pretty hated.

@Esailija yeah thats my point really

you can just say "to have secure code (more information in this other tutorial), use this way"

(I never tried it)

Anybody good at flash here .. [begs]

4:24 PM
@Esailija is

@Darkyen I can flash you later after work
cant take pictures here unfortunately.

yes you should always have a disclaimer that code is not meant for production

@Loktar I am serious
@Esailija dont even need it for production

So.. am.. I...
Yeah they should have a disclaimer I agree, or something about security. BUT how many sites out there dont?

but in practice ... would that really affect things

4:25 PM
@Esailija does flash has P2P ?

I think w3fools just overly criticizes everything about it.

@Esailija no... unlearning is harder than learning right the first time. You can just show the way without sql injection, not even mentioning this problem. It'd still be better
@Loktar yeah, that's for sure

And hey. Maybe w3fools should keep their shit updated.
Since a lot of the stuff has been fixed.

makes them look a bit..... Foolish :P

4:26 PM
I just don't like their name and the fact that they're not related at all to the w3c. It's fooling people. Their tutorials are usually good the beginners

Is it safe to post full gmail addresses on web-pages, or do I have to write "foo at gmail dot com"?

@FlorianMargaine yeah, however I just see that as smart on their part.
Thats how they got ranked so highly

I find it "evil" :)

@Å imeVidas I suppose that wouldn't fool any bot these days

you could consider a lot of marketing "evil"

4:27 PM
^ most really is.

Right :)

Chrome on iOS is really unstable

Like buying and parking pages on misspelled domain names.

doesn't matter, got bucks... that's what it's about after all
screw ethics ;)

Its evil? Maybe, but its also smart.

4:28 PM
the point of the marketing is to not sound evil
in this case, I know I won't be a customer

@phenomnomnominal Chrome is unstable....period.

Idk man I don't see anything wrong with the name.

Firefox = 10x stable then chrome
@Loktar i am falling in love with this PC man

@Darkyen that's a bit or an exaggeration

@Darkyen That's bullshit ...

4:29 PM
Crysis Warhead on full Hd resolution ad max fps

@Darkyen Chrome unstable ?

@OctavianDamiean atleast for me on fedora its hell unstable
also cant even use my GPU so i have to drop GPU acceleration on the old laptop

Fedora is unstable...

@FlorianMargaine Maybe that

If I made something called DotaSchools would that be bad?

4:29 PM
^ Ninja'd

No. That stuff happens all the time.

@Darkyen That's because Fedora sucks. :D

Or WoWArmory, etc. etc. etc

Neither Chromium nor Chrome crash for me (welll... sometimes they crash but not as often as Thunderbird or Firefox or most Ubuntu apps...)

Can't remember the last time chrome crashed, and I use Canary
Except for iOS, which just cannot handle this chat.

4:31 PM
I like that ubuntu tablet interface
pretty cool that phone apps are supported so well

Closing it and reopening makes it bomb every time

@Loktar If they really pull that off it has a good chance.

idk, I think it does with a niche crowd

I mean ti is really different but in a good way.

I don't think it could ever touch Android or IOS, just because of how ingrained those are with the public already
MS even tried, and failed hard

4:32 PM
Oh, no that's not what I meant.

Man I like the Mozilla OS too :?

I meant a chance to actually be used, there are other projects which never even landed.

Ahh yeah, yeah Im excited to see where it goes

Yea, Firefox OS is also something I really look forward to.

@OctavianDamiean Maybe but i need to taste Ubuntu
but can somebody help me install Ubuntu

4:33 PM
I was very impressed with blackberry 10
Especially the browser

I cant even find BiOS on my computer

@Darkyen its as easy as installing windows

@Darkyen Where's the problem installing Ubuntu? :)

Mint is better

@Darkyen Well google for instructions for that.

4:34 PM
UEFI Firmware

@Darkyen do you get a message on boot? Like hit f1/f2/f3/f10/ctrl+esc?

@Loktar nope
Just the republic of gamers logo

Try hitting escape right away
alot of times that gets rid of the logo
and allows you to see whats going on

SublimeText 2 is the best editor ever.
I just want to kiss the creators

@dievardump you have 3
aswell

4:36 PM
@Darkyen That shouldn't be a problem. I'm using 13.04 on my Samsung Series 9 right now.

@OctavianDamiean 12.04 you mean ?

/me downloads Sublime Text

@dievardump Buy a license. :)

@Darkyen YEah I know. I have to try it.

I keep going back to notepad++ :?

4:36 PM
@Darkyen No. 13.04.

@OctavianDamiean When I get my credit card definitely :). 3 days max :D

@OctavianDamiean where do you get that from ?
and so far i have Windows 8 and loving it on 1920px width

@dievardump Or, better wait till ST3 gets released or you'll have to pay something to upgrade.

:D ... just loving what asus did

Woah. This is really nice wtf.

4:38 PM
It's a development build though.
The final release is in April.

@OctavianDamiean whaaaaaaaat -_-
so how different it is from 12.04 ?
any noticable changes ?

@Darkyen A bit like the difference between day and night.

@OctavianDamiean I have no problem paying to upgrade.

@OctavianDamiean you recommend downloading 13 ?

My only problem is paying in dollars since I'm european I have fees :D

4:39 PM
Im sold.
Im going to buy it tonight.

@dievardump Me neither, I just wanted to make sure I told you. Otherwise you'd be all "FU OCTAVIAN, MADE ME PAY TWICE BIATCH!". :D
@Darkyen It is rock solid and stable for me.

Ubuntu... did they change the horrible application bar?

You mean Unity?

Dunno. The thing on the left of the screen

5 hours for for it to finish

4:42 PM
@Darkyen The difference is that Raring Rintail has been optimized a lot, the memory footprint was shrunk dramatically and the overall speed was increased because they use 13.04 as their base for Ubuntu tablet and Ubuntu phone.

Gay Mariage in Minnesota soon? :D

@OctavianDamiean :-)

@dievardump Yea, that's the Launcher of Unity, by fixing you mean what exactly?

@OctavianDamiean You can pin ST3

@dievardump soon the world!

4:43 PM
It shows up with a proper icon

@OctavianDamiean please help me installing it :P
okay (x ?

I have ST2 setup like that, but ST3 is that way by default

@AmaanCheval I know but I think that wasn't the question. :D

@OctavianDamiean I said "change" not "fixed" ^^

I dont wanna fuck up my legitimate copy of windows 8

4:44 PM
@Loktar It'll be unicorn day.

@Darkyen throw it in a vm

@dievardump They won't change it but improve it, I mean it is Ubuntu's answer to desktop computing.

@Loktar VM's suck
its like masterbation

I love VM's :P

@Darkyen It is useless anyway ... I was happy as hell when I got rid of it.

4:45 PM
Have 2 servers now just for VM's

@OctavianDamiean DUDE ITS A GAMING LAPTOP ... I KINDA BOUGHT THIS TO PLAY GAMES

@Loktar to do what with these VM?

@Darkyen Then Windows 8 isn't the best choice anyway.

@dievardump web servers/game servers/irc machines etc.

@OctavianDamiean Windows 7 + Ubuntu 13.04 ?

4:45 PM
irc machines?

heh yeah I joke, really its my node vm
but i just use it to connect to irc on it

@Darkyen If you want a gaming rig you don't got with Windows 8 ... I had huge FPS drops with Windows 8 on almost all games but Minesweeper.

Nice to play with random stuff too. Load up my win 7, or win 8 vm, browse questionable sites
restore a snapshot when im done
Load up winxp, and IE6 to test how a site looks :P

@OctavianDamiean Okayy

ie7+ input[type=number] shim here we go

4:49 PM
meh, but why when I have XP installed already?
Easy to just load up IE and browse to it

XP is the best
:')

Im using that currently.. work laptop is xp :?

@OctavianDamiean From what i see... I Dont have a windows 7 disk .. uh oh
shit

home is XP too. here I had to buy a laptopt when arriving in Canada, so windows 7

also i am worried about ubuntu
because of the bleeding edge GPU

4:50 PM
but XP at home is pretty good.

Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 M

I actually like 7/8 a lot

omg I don't wanna go back in France :(

@Loktar Yeah, 0.875 is awesome.

I'm found of ie8 UI

4:50 PM
@KendallFrey yeah its my favorite

also apparently windows 8 is different from everything i have ever used

@KendallFrey ... bad joke

Too bad I could never get that # when I played soccer :(

i think they made classical desktop an app -_-

@dievardump Better than no joke<

4:51 PM
@AmaanCheval , @NullPointer

@Darkyen I can't promise but it should work. Let me check if I find any issue reports for that graphic card.

> Perfect Workflow in Sublime Text 2

Only compat issue with Ubuntu I've ever had was years ago with my wireless card
other than that its always smooth sailin

4:53 PM
@Loktar I had with audio with my inspirion

@dievardump It's sick, isn't it? :)

it never recognized my soundcard

Ive been using onboard audio forever now

@OctavianDamiean I love this video :)

It always picks them up fortunately

4:54 PM
@OctavianDamiean if you know where I can find originals default key bindings files, it would be great

wtf, I feel like an ass for never installing sublime before
this is amazing.

@Darkyen yes sir

I, sadly, modified the default one instead of the user one

@NullPointer read the screenshot ?

Hello. If I have 2 different buttons , and I'm clicking on the first button , now - can I prevent the other button from executing its onclick ? (jQuery)

4:55 PM
click event or you really have a function binded to the onclick?

function binded...

@dievardump Crap, I don't have ST2 anymore. :/
I'm on ST3 already.

I have 2 buttons. both have different on('click'..... when pressing the first button - it should prevent from the other handler to execute.

oh ok

@Darkyen So, just checked, the Bumblebee should work just fine. The current Nvidia driver is at 304.51. There were some issues with those graphic cards in the past but they got fixed with 302.17.

4:58 PM
@OctavianDamiean Okay
Whats bumblebee ?
