Morning Guys Opinions please. Got a query for you guys, friend of mine recently bought a AMD 7970 All good and well was talking to him about it as it's his 1st build etc just discussing etc, now after playing Far cry 3 he tells me his GPU in MSI afterburner is at 85c so i say well that's a bit hot but from my old AMD card they do run hotter. So i get him to run 3D furmark max temp was 95c fan profile 100%(could hear it down the mic on skype ) GPU idle about 50c. He mentions his room is pretty hot but his CPU Ivy I7 idles 28-30c(Via H80I) and he has a Nzxt Phantom 410 case with 2 fan blowing directly at the GPU.Plus others. My conclusion is it's probably his ambient temp plus the fact that it a factory OC card with what almost look like a reference cooler. Now the thing is he is worried about it and i think it's running a little hotter than it should be but i can't see any real damage being caused or a real concern for it plus 3 year warranty. Cheers
If the ambient temperature is high it won't be helping a factory OC on a stock cooler you are correct. You could try slowing down the case intake fans on the GPU side. As I know mine start to interfere if they are set to high (IE. They disrupt the air flow to much) As you said it is under warranty but if he is really worried then either downclock it slightly or try it in another machine in a different environment to see if it is the card. Could just be pushing the card to hard (to high on details etc. ) Really you should not need 100% on the fans. Sent on my CM10 JB powered i9100 by TapaTalk 2
7970s run hot, OC them more so his temps are high because you need a high air flow case for the cooler that's on it. You could drop the overclock would help.
In my experience 7970s run cool!! Had one in my raven rv02 and it never peaked over 65c. Now ive got it under water it doesnt break 49
As others have said, decreasing the overclock is a good option. These cards do run hot, as expected, just ensure the room is at a decent temperature and the cooling within the system is good enough too.
Cheers Lads(Rep for y'all) so seems it's the combination of Hot card/OC/high ambient temps. I have suggested to buy this Artic Acclero Xtreme will see how it preforms after and will post back result for others.
I'd say watercooling it would be the safe option, expensive but safe. Or he could take it back and get a different 7970, which doesn't have a reference cooler.
