PMC writes to KCB,seeks permission for BEG campus nullah work

If the natural stream of the nullah is not restored, the civic body fears that it could lead to a disaster during monsoon.

Expressing concern over possible flooding at BEG campus, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) wrote to the Kirkee Cantonment Board (KCB),seeking permission to take up nullah channelising work. If the natural stream of the nullah is not restored, the civic body fears that it could lead to a disaster during monsoon. However, the KCB said it can grant permission only after the consent of BEG.

The PMC had a meeting with officers of KCB and BEG to resolve the issue as early as possible. Thereafter,it wrote to the KCB for permission. In a letter, city engineer Prashant Waghmare said,“It is observed that the natural water stream carrying storm water has been tampered with in the BEG campus along Alandi road during the construction of MAP buildings. This is the main stream having large catchments on its upstream side and carries large amount of storm water to Mula river.”

During monsoon,he said it is most likely to cause water logging on its upstream and will innundate the entire BEG campus and adjacent residential buildings along Alandi road. “The natural ground topography does not allow us to divert it away from your campus. In order to avoid waterlogging,PMC is ready with budgetary provision and engineering design for proper channeling within the BEG campus. In order to expedite the work, you are requested to grant permission to carry out the work,” it said, adding the stream would be channelised from Alandi Road to Lokmanya Tilak Road under the supervision of KCB. A KCB officer said,“They have received the PMC letter, but cannot do much unless BEG gives it consent for carrying the work.”
