26 Then he released for them Barabbas, and having (A)scourged[a] Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

27 (B)Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the (C)governor's headquarters,[b] and they gathered the whole (D)battalion[c] before him. 28 And they stripped him and put (E)a scarlet robe on him, 29 and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they (F)mocked him, saying, “Hail, (G)King of the Jews!” 30 And (H)they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head. 31 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and (I)led him away to crucify him.

The Crucifixion

32 (J)(K)As they went out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. They compelled this man to (L)carry his cross. 33 (M)And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull), 34 (N)they offered him wine to drink, mixed with (O)gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. 35 And when they had crucified him, (P)they divided his garments among them by casting lots. 36 Then they sat down and (Q)kept watch over him there. 37 And over his head they put the charge against him, which read, “This is Jesus, (R)the King of the Jews.” 38 Then two (S)robbers were crucified with him, (T)one on the right and one on the left. 39 And (U)those who passed by (V)derided him, (W)wagging their heads 40 and saying, (X)“You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! (Y)If you are (Z)the Son of God, come down from the cross.” 41 So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying, 42 (AA)“He saved others; (AB)he cannot save himself. (AC)He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43 (AD)He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him. For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 (AE)And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way.

The Death of Jesus

45 Now from the sixth hour[d] there was darkness over all the land[e] until the ninth hour.[f] 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus (AF)cried out with a loud voice, saying, (AG)“Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 47 And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.” 48 And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with (AH)sour wine, and put it on a reed and (AI)gave it to him to drink. 49 But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.” 50 And Jesus (AJ)cried out again with a loud voice and (AK)yielded up his spirit.

51 And behold, (AL)the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And (AM)the earth shook, and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of (AN)the saints (AO)who had fallen asleep were raised, 53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into (AP)the holy city and appeared to many. 54 (AQ)When the centurion and those who were with him, (AR)keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, (AS)“Truly this was the Son[g] of God!”

55 There were also (AT)many women there, looking on (AU)from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, (AV)ministering to him, 56 among whom were (AW)Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph and (AX)the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

Jesus Is Buried

57 (AY)When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus. 58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud 60 and (AZ)laid it in his own new tomb, (BA)which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled (BB)a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and (BC)the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the tomb.

The Guard at the Tomb

62 The next day, that is, after the day of (BD)Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate 63 and said, “Sir, we remember how (BE)that impostor said, while he was still alive, (BF)‘After three days I will rise.’ 64 Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, (BG)lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.” 65 Pilate said to them, “You have (BH)a guard[h] of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by (BI)sealing the stone and setting a guard.

The Resurrection

28 (BJ)Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and (BK)the other Mary went to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake, for (BL)an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. (BM)His appearance was like lightning, and (BN)his clothing white as snow. And for fear of him the guards trembled and (BO)became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, (BP)as he said. Come, see the place where he[i] lay.

15 So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having (A)scourged[a] Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

16 (B)And the soldiers led him away inside (C)the palace (that is, (D)the governor's headquarters),[b] and they called together the whole (E)battalion.[c] 17 And they clothed him in (F)a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. 18 And they began to salute him, (G)“Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they were striking his head with a reed and (H)spitting on him and (I)kneeling down in homage to him. 20 And when they had (J)mocked him, they stripped him of (K)the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they (L)led him out to crucify him.

The Crucifixion

21 (M)And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. 22 (N)And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). 23 And they offered him wine mixed with (O)myrrh, but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him and (P)divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. 25 And (Q)it was the third hour[d] when they crucified him. 26 And the inscription of the charge against him read, (R)“The King of the Jews.” 27 And with him they crucified two (S)robbers, (T)one on his right and one on his left.[e] 29 And (U)those who passed by derided him, (V)wagging their heads and saying, (W)“Aha! (X)You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save yourself, and come down from the cross!” 31 So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, (Y)“He saved others; (Z)he cannot save himself. 32 Let (AA)the Christ, (AB)the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may (AC)see and believe.” (AD)Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.

The Death of Jesus

33 And when the sixth hour[f] had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.[g] 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus (AE)cried with a loud voice, (AF)“Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 35 And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” 36 And someone ran and filled a sponge with (AG)sour wine, put it on a reed (AH)and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” 37 And Jesus (AI)uttered a loud cry and (AJ)breathed his last. 38 And (AK)the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. 39 (AL)And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he[h] breathed his last, he said, (AM)“Truly this man was the Son[i] of God!”

40 There were also (AN)women looking on (AO)from a distance, among whom were (AP)Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and (AQ)Salome. 41 When he was in Galilee, they followed him and (AR)ministered to him, and there were also many other women who (AS)came up with him to Jerusalem.

Jesus Is Buried

42 (AT)And when evening had come, since it was (AU)the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, (AV)a respected member of the council, who (AW)was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died.[j] And summoning (AX)the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead. 45 And when he learned from (AY)the centurion that he was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph. 46 And Joseph[k] bought (AZ)a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and (BA)laid him in a tomb (BB)that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled (BC)a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 (BD)Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.

The Resurrection

16 (BE)(BF)When the Sabbath was past, (BG)Mary Magdalene, (BH)Mary the mother of James, and (BI)Salome (BJ)bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away (BK)the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back—(BL)it was very large. And (BM)entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, (BN)dressed in (BO)a white robe, and (BP)they were alarmed. And he said to them, (BQ)“Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that (BR)he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, (BS)just as he told you.”
