The imposing school building of St. Peter's school in Manipur’s Churachandpur district was gutted in the wee hours of Wednesday by unidentified persons. All furniture, documents and other items were burned to cinders along with the building.
There has been no claim for the act so far.
Police feel that those opposing the reopening of the schools might be behind the burning.
For more than a month, all the schools in the district were closed down as a part of a >protest against the > three anti-migrant bills passed in the Assembly on August 31. During the protest, nine were killed and over 10 government offices were torched.
When some students' organisations called for the reopening of the schools, as the students were at the receiving end, there were objections from some circles. Some students staged sit in protests with placards saying that they shall not attend the classes till the bills are withdrawn.
No arrest has been made.
Meanwhile all schools in the district were closed down on Wednesday in protest against the burning of the school.
