Rotterdam to Renew Environmental Ship Index Discounts
The Port of Rotterdam has announced that its discount programme for "clean ships", known as the Enivornmental Ship Index (ESI), will be renewed.
"Ships which score 31 points on the index receive a 10 percent discount on the ship section of the port tariff. This discount is doubled if ships have relatively low nitrogen emissions," explained the Port of Rotterdam.
"This means that a ship must score at least 31 points on the NOx emission section of the ESI."
Overall, the port has increased tariffs for ocean-going vessels visiting Rotterdam by 0.5 percent for next year, a figure it says is equal to half of the inflation rate over the past year.
The increase is said to have come in accordance with last year's the three-year agreement between Deltalinqs, Vereniging van Rotterdamse Cargadoors (VRC), VNPI, and Rotterdam's port authority on changes to the port tariffs.
The port authority further states the tariff rate for crude oil tankers will remain at 1.5 percent below indexation in 2016, adding that "this means a 1.0 percent fall in the tariff in 2016."
Last year, Carbon War Room founder Sir Richard Branson predicted that ports giving discounts for bunker saving vessels would rise 500 percent in 2015.
