The History of Kingston's Higgins House

Part two of a three-part column.

Because of the age of the Higgins Home, it is quite difficult to research the amount of history I like to collect on homes. Jedediah Higgins purchased 1,000 acres of property stretching from Raymond Road in South Brunswick to the old site of Rockingham on Route 518 in Rocky Hill.

The purchase was made between 1705 and 1709.  The purchase price was one sow and eight piglets paid to the Lenape Indians, who had acquired a taste for pork.

The house was built somewhere around 1714, most likely funded by the construction of another important structure in South Brunswick and Franklin, the Rockingham house.

Mr. Higgins built this historic home between 1702 and 1710. The house sits on two acres now, built with several structures for storage and spa activities. The renovation took over three years to complete, while painstakingly preserving the original charm and beauty of this historic structure.

The home is listed on the National Historic Register. The family burying ground lies directly across the street, and Jedediah and his wife Hanna are buried along with other family members.

The stones have fallen and only two stand tall now, most are now unreadable or broken. Jedediah died in 1772 at 82 years of age and his wife Hanna died in 1779 at 79 years of age.
