A prominent Idaho pastor was shot and wounded on Sunday, a day after leading an invocation prayer at a campaign rally for Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz.
Tim Remington, 55, senior pastor of the nondenominational Altar Church in Coeur d’Alene, was taken to the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds, NBC News reported. The Kootenai Health and Medical Center on Sunday said he was in stable condition, and relatives reported that he was conscious and talking to paramedics on the way to the hospital.
Police have identified Kyle Andrew Odom, 30, a white man with blond hair and blue eyes, as the suspect. He fled the scene in what police believe to be a 2004 silver Honda Accord and remains at-large.
Members of the congregation from Altar and surrounding churches gathered on Sunday to pray for Mr. Remington. Associate pastor John Padula said the church was praying not only for their pastor’s recovery, but for the assailant’s salvation.
“We don’t love him less than anybody else,” Mr. Padula told a local NBC station. “And we pray that he comes to know Jesus Christ as his lord and savior, so we don’t want to see anything bad happen to him, either.”
Mr. Remington, an outspoken advocate for conservative and Christian causes in the Gem State, delivered a prayer for Mr. Cruz at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds on Saturday.
“Our prayers are with Pastor Tim, his family, and the doctors who are supervising his care,” Catherine Frazier, a Cruz campaign spokeswoman, told NBC News. “We pray for his full recovery and are thankful for the efforts of the law enforcement to ensure the attacker is swiftly brought to justice.”
Mr. Remington also heads Good Samaritan Rehabilitation, a program for alcohol and drug addicts in Idaho.
